Last Sunday the priest at our church said that Advent is not in preparation for Christmas, but rather it is in preparation for the second coming of Christ.
In other words he was saying that the celebration of Christmas is just that - a celebration of what has happened and it is a reminder of what is to come. When we prepare for Christmas in our secular way - cleaning the house, buying presents for loved ones, throwing out the old and bringing in the way - we should reflect that this is the same way we should prepare for Christ. Christmas is a reminder to us that Jesus will come again and that we MUST prepare ourselves for His coming. Hence the priest statement that Advent is not a preparation of Christmas but a preparation for the coming of Christ.
But we don't only prepare for Christ's second coming during Advent, but because of this season we are reminded in a unique and joyful way that He will come again and that as we prepare our houses inside and out, for the coming of "guests" during this season, Advent is a time when we prepare for the most important Guest of all!
